Spring Decorating: 5 Ways to Freshen Up Your Home for the Season

As we write this post in early April, the temperature in Connecticut is hovering in the mid-30s and much of the state is covered in fresh snow. But, despite the fact that the weather hasn’t gotten the memo that the seasons changed a few weeks back we’re keeping our minds firmly planted in spring mode, because we are so over winter both outdoors and in. While we don’t have much control over the former, we have plenty of ideas for freshening up indoor spaces for the spring season. Here are a few fun spring decorating ideas to help keep you occupied and optimistic until seasonal weather finally makes as appearance.

Go to the garden. Bright, beautiful flowers are one of the hallmarks of the spring season, so April is perfect time to incorporate floral and botanical prints inside as they’ll feel timely through the end of summer. To keep florals from feeling too traditional or even outdated, choose oversized prints in on-trend color palettes (like the pillows in the image above, and the pair below), and mix and match then with contemporary, graphic patterns like bold geometrics or stripes.

Get inspired by the coast. In New England, warm weather means beach season, which makes the coastline another major source of inspiration for spring decor. Nautical stripes are always a classic, but we also love subtler nods to the sea, like decor in pale shades of aqua and gray, marine-style lighting, and natural seagrass rugs.

Try a new texture. Heavy textiles like velvet, faux fur, leather, suede, and wool all feel too wintry for warmer months, so take spring cleaning as an opportunity to stow away any throw pillows, rugs, or accent pieces in these fabrics and replace them with something light and new. Textiles like canvas, cotton, linen will instantly give your space a lift.

Give an old piece new life. Spring is a season of growth and renewal, and you can apply a similar perspective to your furniture. Give dated or weathered case goods new life with a brightly colored can of paint, or reinvent old upholstery items by re-covering it in a new textile. This classic George Smith sofa from TLV is the perfect candidate for re-upholstery.

Create an outdoor gathering space. Warm weather will be here before we know it, and one of the best parts of spring and summer is gathering with friends and family outdoors. To create an al fresco entertaining space that’s just as comfortable and functional as your home, we love the idea of dividing a backyard or patio into a multi-use space, with areas dedicated both to dining and lounging.
