“Water Carriers” by Lucio Ranucci, Oil on Canvas, 1981
“Water Carriers” is a figurative painting by Italian-born artist Lucio Ranucci (b.1925). This is a beautifully executed work characteristic of the artist’s style of depicting bold forms in spacial schemes. He uses rich colors with figures that seem to suspend in their own space, juxtaposed with a background of solid flat planes. Travels to South America inspired Ranucci to paint with social awareness including populist scenes of every day working people. Seen also in this work is the influence of the great French Cubist artist Ferdinand Leger who painted figures in tubular forms. Ranucci lives in Saint-Paul de Vence, France. An impressive and engaging painting to showcase. Signed lower left and dated, 1981.
