Paul McCobb

Paul McCobb: The Lesser-Known Modernist. Although he didn't reach the notoriety of some of his contemporaries, this Massachusetts native made a significant impact on design. Inspired by classical forms, Paul McCobb furniture was designed to be functional and approachable. His straightforward, unembellished designs were in every living room in America by 1952, even if it was just on the TV set, after he designed the set of The Today Show. He is often cited for introducing the masses to high design. McCobb’s Planner Group, Directional and Perimeter furniture lines made McCobb a household name in the middle class suburbs of the 1950s. The Museum of Modern Art in NYC awarded him with their prestigious Good Design Award a total of five times. He died in 1969 at the age of 52.
