How to Refresh Your Decor for the New Year

We’re just a few days away from 2016 (crazy, right?) and the start of a New Year means the start of new beginnings. And we’re not talking strict diets and self-help plans. Our idea of starting fresh is a little more fun than that, by updating your home decor. Taking the initiative to refresh your space and create a home that feels like a true reflection of your personality can put a smile on your face every day, and if that’s not something worth striving for this year, then we don’t know what is. Are you on board with our new year, new home resolution? Good, because we’ve put together a few tips for giving your space a total refresh.

  1. Swap out (or add in) wall art. What you hang on your walls has a big impact on the way your home feels. Empty walls feels sterile and unwelcoming, while walls covered in years of family memories may begin to feel overstimulating. If you have a hard time committing to major wall art purchases (and thus have had bare walls for years), try picking out a bunch of smaller ones and creating a gallery wall, which can be easily (and inexpensively) changed as your tastes and style evolves. If you’ve gotten stuck in trap of hanging everything up, try removing all of you wall art, picking out only what you truly love, and storing the rest.
  2. Try new textiles. Like wall art, textiles (especially rugs, drapery, and throw pillows) can make a huge impact in a room without requiring an investment in new furniture. If something about your room feels “off” try buying a new rug or drapery that ties in all of the colors you used in the room. Then, purchase a few throw pillows to match, and consider your room refreshed!
  3. Edit, edit, edit. You most likely have an idea in your head about the way you want your home to look, and many of the pieces you own might be heading in that direction. It’s the ones that aren’t–that trendy little knickknack you had to have that’s at odds with your traditional home, or that dated pillow you feel obligated to display because it was a gift–that are throwing off the look. The answer to this problem is simple: Get rid of anything that’s not your style or contributing to a peaceful, beautiful home. And don’t feel guilty about parting with things you don’t love: think of it as an exercise in your own happiness.
