How to Consign Your Furniture

Whether you’re moving, redecorating, or cleaning out an old storage unit, sometimes it’s necessary to get rid of old pieces of furniture. But, if you’ve ever actually tried to get rid of old furniture–whether by selling it, donating it, or simply throwing it out — you know that it can end up being a bigger headache than your move or renovation itself. Which is why opting to consign your furniture can often be the easiest and most rewarding way to make some extra room in your home. You don’t have to think about advertising your pieces, inviting Craigslist strangers into your home to view them, or scheduling a pickup service to come and take them to a donation center.

Below, we’ve laid out the process for consigning your furniture the easy way.

  1. Sort out the sellable. Just because you no longer have room for an antique or family heirloom doesn’t mean you have to send it to the dump. Antique pieces in good condition can fetch top dollar through consignment shops. What likely won’t sell? Furniture with permanent wear and tear, trendy items whose heyday has passed, and anything overly personal. Not sure what to sell and what to toss? At The Local Vault, one of our expert curators will come to your home to help you sort through your furniture collection to separate the treasures and the trash.
  2. Take a few photos. Many consignment shops will want to see images of the pieces you’re thinking about selling. Though you don’t need to break out a DSLR and a tripod for a full-scale photo shoot, having well-lit photos (both close-ups and detail shots) of your items will help the consignment shop get a better idea of the volume they might be possibly taking into their store or adding to their website.
  3. Schedule an appointment. At The Local Vault, we come to you to vet your furniture and take high-quality, styled images (like the one at the top of this post!) that will go up on our website. Our goal is to make your furniture look good so it sells quickly and you can get on with the rest of your to-do list.
  4. Have it picked up. One great part about consigning with an online retailer like The Local Vault is that you don’t have to worry about having your pieces brought into a physical shop, only to have them not sell and have to go retrieve them. With TLV, you keep all of your furniture in your home. Once it sells, we’ll set up the pick-up and delivery process around your schedule.
